The Pentti Malaska Futures Award is given to a research-based and groundbreaking visionary innovation that can help with building a more sustainable global future. The University of Turku has granted the €30,000 Pentti Malaska Futures Award to Finnish company Woodio Oy.

Woodio is a Finnish modern-day interior and design brand that brings together the best of Nordic design traditions and the use of sustainable bio-material innovation in a contemporary way. Today the company has launched the world’s first 100% waterproof solid wood composite toilet seat – Woodio Block – made from real wood chips and advanced resins.
Woodio has been selected for funding by the European Innovation Council (EIC), more precisely by its EIC Accelerator programme. The funding comprises a EUR 2.5 million grant and an option for further EUR 5 million equity financing.
Woodio, a manufacturer of innovative solid wood composite bathroom furniture, continues to strengthen its board. Joakim Westerlund brings manufacturing industry and production development experience to the Woodio Board.

Our brand
The ceramic industry is among the most polluting industries globally, so we realized that the bathroom industry has lot to improve. Our Woodio material innovation was inspired by an idea of making more sustainable wooden bathroom tiles. At first, this seemed impossible and extremely challenging, but it was a mountain our team was ready to conquer. And we’re so glad we did, because a new material was born! Our role as an eco-design company is to raise discussion around topics that have an impact on the well-being of our Earth. As a brand we want to offer a solution that is less of a burden to the environment and change the way the world thinks about bathrooms.
