The Woodio® material we’ve developed is a fully waterproof wood composite designed as an eco-friendlier alternative to ceramics and stone. Its sustainability is based on low water and energy consumption during production, as well as the lightweight nature and the material’s utilization at the end of its lifecycle.
Mission to fight against climate change
Woodio® material is designed as an environmentally friendly alternative to high carbon footprint products and furnishings for wet rooms. Our mission is to combat climate change by replacing high carbon footprint materials with our innovation and design.
The material we’ve developed is a unique combination of wood chips and a resin-based binder. Our products are manufactured by casting into moulds. Unlike the production of ceramic products, for example, Woodio’s manufacturing process does not require high temperatures, generates minimal material waste, and water is only needed for colouring the wood chips. Thanks to these factors, the carbon footprint of our products is today 30-50% smaller than that of traditional ceramics or stone-based products.
Woodio products are durable, easy to maintain, and unbreakable under normal use. The wood in our products stores carbon throughout its lifecycle. At the end of their life, the products can be disposed of as energy waste or returned to us for crushing and reuse in cement production.
Carbon negative in 2025
The construction industry is estimated to be responsible for approximately 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, there is an urgent need for sustainable building solutions. We aim to be pioneers in sustainable construction and to transform the industry through our actions.
We have set a goal for our products to be carbon negative by 2025. Carbon negativity is achieved when products capture more carbon dioxide than the emissions generated from their production and use. This can be accomplished by increasing the biobased content of Woodio® material and ensuring the end-of-life cycle of our products is managed effectively. The recycling process for the material is progressing well, thanks to Kuusakoski’s KiMuRa process. Increasing the biobased content of the material involves replacing fossil-based resin with bio-resin and other biobased binders.
Circular economy and side streams
These days, the raw materials for our products consist of aspen chips sourced from nearby forests that are PEFC and FSC certified, as well as birch chips derived from the side streams of the Finnish forest industry. We are increasing the proportion of side stream materials in our products, with the aim of exclusively using side stream wood chips by 2026.

About us
Behind the story of Woodion lies a seemingly crazy idea and a group of top professionals in their field who wanted to see the world differently. Our original idea was to manufacture wooden tiles for bathrooms, because it sounded fun and challenging.
Recycling
Woodio material is highly durable, and at the end of its lifecycle, Woodio products and sheet materials can be sent to our factory in Finland, where the material is sorted and used as part of cement production.
